英語のテストに出題される問題で、一番難しいと言われるものが英作文でしょう。
ところで、作文とは、普通何かについて自分がどう思うかを文字で表現する事ですが、
そうだとすると、試験の英作文は、果たして『英作文』と言えるのでしょうか。
様々なご意見をお待ちしています。

基調発言にも書きましたが、試験に出題されている『英作文』は、正確に言うと、
『翻訳文』なのです。それならそれとして、なぜ、そのように呼ばないのでしょうか。
他人が作った日本文を英文に書き換える事で、自分の気持ちや考えなどが表現できる
はずはないし、日本文に合う言葉を選ぶ事だけが、自分を表現できる部分であるはずも
ありません。
英作文ができる人は英語力があるという事はわかりますが、その英語力は翻訳力で
あって、表現力ではないと私は思います。表現力とは、自分の経験や知識を土台にした
自分自身の考えを表現する力の事のはずです。
さて、皆さんは、そういう疑問を持った事がないでしょうか。この問題は、英語だけ
に限らず、国語の作文にも言える事です。自己を表現する事は教えてもらえず、教えて
くれた事は『他人の表現をいかに翻訳するか』ではなかったでしょうか。

実は、このネットではここのプロフィールにアップしたハンドル名を使おうと思ってい
たのですが、自分で忘れてしまい、別のネットで使っているハンドルを知らずに使って
しまったのです。
ハンドルを間違えたことは気づいていましたが、それを直そうと思ってプロフィールの
修正を試みてみたのです。が、なかなかうまくいかないので、結局あきらめてしまいま
した。直し方教えてください。どうせなら、プロフィールを書き直すという手もあった
んですね。今、思いつきました。
ところで、 『英文作』とはうまいですね。実際、英語を教えていて、英作文ほど馬鹿
らしいというか、つまらないというか、ともかく英作文に限ったことではないのです
が、一番自分自身とは関係がまったくないことを想像し英語に翻訳することにどんな意
味があるというのでしょうか。答がひとつに決まってしまう作文では、思考の柔軟性を
養うことにはならないし、だからこそ使うべき時に使えないという愚かなことになるの
ではないでしょうか。
与えられたひとつの日本文を英語に翻訳する時、いくらでも方法はあるはずだし、
まして日本語の特徴は日本文化に根ざしている独特のニュアンスにある訳だから、
そのニュアンスをきちんと伝えられなければ何の役にも立たないはずです。
例えば、次の日本文を適切な英語に翻訳するとどういう文ができるでしょうか。

英作文の試験の場合は、帰ってくるときにただ×が付けられているだけ
という訳ではなくどこがどのようにおかしいかという解説があり、これ
により本人の努力しだいで英語力を高めることができるのでは？と思い
ます。（試験の場合、すくなくとも穴埋めでinとかwithとか入れるのよ
りは良いと思います。使う方の側の意見として）
書き込みの内容を見ていてなんとなく英作文の定義が和文英訳というこ
とになってしまっているように感じるのですが、別に授業中に
"What did you do last weekend?"
と質問するだけでも返答は一応は作文になるわけですし、
”自分自信とは関係がまったくないことを想像し英語に翻訳する”
ことばかりが英作文である必要はないと思います。

ですが、良い英語の先生に巡り会えたようですね。そういう指導をしてくれる
のであれば、役に立つはずですが、そうした指導を受けられたということは
好運以外のなにものでもないと思います。

私の言い足りないことをすべて言って頂いたように思います。
私が、なぜ英作文というものだけを取り上げたのかというと、英語としてしまえば、
一見簡単なように思える題材のように思えても、実際は話が抽象的にならざるを得な
くなるからです。
ここで、はっきりと定義しておくと、『英作文とは、中学の定期試験や高校の入試問題
で筆記問題のひとつの形態のこと』です。つまり、試験という目的を持って指導されて
いる英作文の問題であり、もちろんその指導も含まれてきます。
私自身、某塾で中学生に英語を教えています。で、その子の英語の実力（定期試験ある
いは入試問題に充分対応できる力）を把握する一番簡単な方法が英作文（与えられた
日本語から英語に翻訳する）だと思います。その時、私の心には、そうであるとは思い
ながら、でも本来の英作文は違うはずだ、という考えが浮かんでくるのです。
ＮＡＫさんの言うようなものが、本当の英作文だと思いますが、現実には入試英語と
いうつまらない（やり方によってはおもしろいが）ものと化してしまっているのです。
少しでも理想に近づいていくように私も塾で可能な限り試みてみたい（入試をまったく
度外視することは現状無理ですが）と思います。
英作文の問題ですが、不安ながら答を書いて頂いたことに感謝します。
私も英語ではまだまだ知らないことが多々あります。正解を意識せず自分の表現で
書いて頂けたら良いのではないかと思います。まっ、未知なる答を求めて遊ぶ一種の
ゲームだと思ってください。
さすがに現役時代しっかり勉強されていたのでしよう。私もそうだと思います。
おそらくその表現はイギリス英語で、有名なビ−トルズの歌の題名にも使われていた
はずですね。
もう少し砕けたい言い方では、‘Easy come, easy go.’などとも訳せるのではないで
しょうか。違っていたら教えてください。あとは、前後の分脈次第でどうにでも
訳せるかもしれませんね。例えば、ある人が仕事で失敗してこれから先どうしたら
良いか悩んでいる時にいう『成るように成るさ。』だったら、こう言うこともできる
でしょう。‘Everything will be all right.’
次の問題は、『だから言ったじゃないか。』です。どのような状況で言うのかによって
様々英語に訳せると思います。おもしろい訳があったら教えてください。

I'm very sorry for my poor English. Now I'm working as an English teacher,
but I was discouraged a little bit after reading your response. Because my
English was so bookish that you couldn't understand it.
One thing I'd like to tell you is that my English has been influenced with
the English that I'm teaching. Most of English teachers have no time to read
English books and listen to English expressions spoken by natives. That's
why we can teach only how to write grammatically in English to make students
pass the entrance exams of high school. But I know that I need to learn from
natives.
Thank you for your correction of my mistakes. I could correct my knowledge of
English expressions. But I don't care so much about mistakes, because I always
make mistakes even when I speak Japanese. That's doesn't mean that I hate to

before, I knew you were a English teacher. I think that a work of
teacher is not only to teach English language but to influence
students' future. It is very difficult work.
I completely forgot school English as it were and learned English
once again during my work. Since I am not confident about
English, I do not intend to correct it directly except apparent
mistake.

Including me, on the stage of education, we have a problem that
what is real English. When I sometimes talk to a neighbor from
Asian in English, I realy understand what he says. However, I
had hardly comprehended English from European(French) on my first
time. I supporse that the European English is a little bit
different from that we know.
In last week before, I did not catch a simple word friend" on
a phone from France. I was not able to understand the word as
friend but fond". At last, I had to ask the spelling.

I've just read your responce, and I'm very glad about your suggestion that
we should talk in English to learn better English. Let's keep using English,
shall we?
One thing that I want to tell you is that you don't need to care so much
about your usage of English. I don't and won't criticize your mistakes of
English, even if they are absolutely wrong. Because I want to know a lot
about yourself as a human-being who can make mistakes. Making mistakes is
the only thing that we, human-being, can do and computers can't. We are
more creative and imaginative than computers. That's why we can program
and operate them.
Having read the article written by Peter Milward, I realize that there is
something funny and ironical in it. It has made me laugh. And I remember
that I've ever read a few books written by him since I was a college student.
Have you ever read many books written by him? Could you choose the one of
them, which is your favorite?
Let me turn back to the topic about English composition.
I'd like to know how to teach it to students. Please tell me about it,

While we use English, I will improve my English without a fear of

before writting in English?"? If so, I would say that the way you suggested
is the most effective one but the most difficult one to teachers.

Could you imagine that Japanese teachers don't try to read Japanese books?
This is very strange and surprizing to me. I've read Japan Times since
May of this year. And sometimes read Newsweek. That's because my English
ability has become worse since I started to teach. It is unbelivable, isn't
it? The more I teach, the worse my English ability becomes. And I could
realize that what I'm teaching is not English to communicate with but
tactics to pass the entrance exams of high school. Therefore the English
education for the latter purpose couldn't have been effective for the
improvement of communication with people. What is more, the English taught
for that purpose is like a system of mathematics or a game of computers.
How could we change this strange education system? As far as it exists,
this kind of English will survive and keep children away from communicating
with people in English.
2. Why do they translate Japanese to English?
Who tells the difference between Japanese and
English. There is a difference though we think
it same meaning in both of them.
You're right. This kind of differnce is just like the differnce between
a cliche, which means "kotowaza" in Japanese, and its meaning. This metaphor
isn't the best one but the better one. What I mean is that we, as the 20th-
century-born-people(I should have said `Japanese born in the 20th century),
couldn't know the real meaning of a cliche without living in the socity where
it was created. For example, you might know that "nasake wa hito no tame
narazu". This is a very popular cliche in Japan but few Japanese know its
exact meaning. Those who understand it negatively wouldn't help any people
in trouble, but they're wrong. Because the right meaning is that we should
help anyone in trouble not for them but for us. But I couldn't blame them
for that reason. You might say that they should be blamed for the benefit
of themselves. I could do if they have lived in the society where the cliche
had started to be used among the people.
The explanation of the metaphor has been too long to reach the conclusion of
my answer. I hope you will follow my thinking. I would like to say that
those, including myself, who has never lived in the country where English
is used couldn't exactly know the meanings of English. And this doesn't
mean that we should permit them to teach English even if they don't know
the differnce. What I'd like them to do is trying to know it as possible as
they can. And also I'd like to suggest that the Japanese education ministry
should take the students who want to become English teachers to the country
where English is used. This plan must be done for a long period.

I've read about that somewhere in a cirtain book, whose name I forgot. Some
native English's names must be on the last page of the textbook. But I
wouldn't belive that they are crazy about the reform of the current English
textbook. Because most of members are Japanese and they hardly refuse
what the Japanese education ministry demand to correct the textbook. Even if
they think they are right, they wouldn't express themselves honestly because
of the strong power that the Japanese burocracy has. There might be the self
-defence between both of them. But this effect has caused the present result
of the English education. Would you think that the relation of the two will
become better for us and children?

As I've presented before, I would think the English taught in most of schools
are taught not for communication but for exams. One of the reason is that
it is easy for teachers to teach and analyze students' achievement of English
learning. Could you imagin that the English teacher who don't speak English
as well as natives try to analyze students' speaking abilities? It might be
some kind of science-fiction drama.
In my lessons I usually tell my students that the Engish you've studying
since the first grade of juior high school is as easy as a role playing game
you've played at home, so you don't have to commit yourselves to it as
seriously as you've studied. Because the role playing game has its small
system made by human-beings. The way to reach the goal is that you have to
take any items you'll use later. Otherwise you 'll be dead or you must go
back to where you can take items you need. I'd like to tell both students and
parents that it's not necessary for them to be too serious to think about the
whole world. We are not ants which only work for their queen but not for
themselves. We are able to percieve the whole world by thinking. We are able
to think about ourselves and others. That's the proof of human-beings.
That's also the result of development of sience. We as learners of universe
should be gamers of the universal system including the system of Japanese
education. I'd like to conclude that students who are smarter than ex-
students enjoy the present game of education and take any items you use in
the future.

ても、私にとっても、違ったものになると思います。それに誰もが、
いまだ収りついていないのではないでしょうか。

当にきついことを書いても、答えるべきところは答えて下さいました。外にも、売り言
葉に近いこと書くひともいましたが、それでもこちらの言うことに対する具体的反応が
得られました。
「あら、ムーンさんが登場しました。」という文の必要性がまったく理解できない。
「いじめの構造」というやつですか。

見受けました。

はやっと入手して読むことができました。この記述には非常に説得力があり
ます。ですが，我々（言語研究関係者以外の人々）の周囲では手に取りにく
い辞書群を使用しているため，この雑誌によらずに裏を取るためには数日間
休暇を取る必要があるのではないかと思われました。それは，どのような辞
書が現に世の中に存在してどこへ行けばリファレンスできるのか，などの情
報収集以前の手間が非常に大きいと予想されたからです。
私が以前書いた「情報公開」とは，「現代英語教育」の縮小版のようなもの
だったのですが，期待のし過ぎだったでしょうか？

あんまり久しぶりなので皆さんお忘れかも知れませんが。
MOONです。突然に無責任な撤退をしてもう８ヵ月になります。実は入院しておりました。
背骨を折って自由がきかずアクセスできませんでした。中途半端で終わらせたようで
すみませんでした。
今読み返すとなかなかハイな書き込みをしていたものです。
改めて議論を続けたい方がいらっしゃいましたらその旨お知らせください。いや、議論
